Assignment: Advocating for the Nursing Role in Program Design and Implementation

As their names imply, the honeyguide bird and the honey badger both share an affinity for honey. Honeyguide birds specialize in finding beehives but struggle to access the honey within. Honey badgers are well-equipped to raid beehives but cannot always find them. However, these two honey-loving species have learned to collaborate on an effective means to meet their objectives. The honeyguide bird guides honey badgers to newly discovered hives. Once the honey badger has ransacked the hive, the honey guide bird safely enters to enjoy the leftover honey.

Much like honeyguide birds and honey badgers, nurses and health professionals from other specialty areas can—and should—collaborate to design effective programs. Nurses bring specialties to the table that make them natural partners to professionals with different specialties. When nurses take the requisite leadership in becoming involved throughout the healthcare system, these partnerships can better design and deliver highly effective programs that meet objectives.

In this Assignment, you will practice this type of leadership by advocating for a healthcare program. Equally as important, you will advocate for a collaborative role of the nurse in the design and implementation of this program. To do this, assume you are preparing to be interviewed by a professional organization/publication regarding your thoughts on the role of the nurse in the design and implementation of new healthcare programs.

To Prepare:

Review the Resources and reflect on your thinking regarding the role of the nurse in the design and implementation of new healthcare programs.
Select a healthcare program within your practice and consider the design and implementation of this program.
Reflect on advocacy efforts and the role of the nurse in relation to healthcare program design and implementation. Interview Transcript Assignment: Advocating for the Nursing Role in Program Design and Implementation

Expert Answer and Explanation

Roles of Nurses and Advocates for Healthcare Programs

Nurses play a vital role in ensuring that patients get the best and quality care. One of the ways they provide patient care is through advocacy (Turale & Kunaviktikul. 2019). This assignment aims to highlight the role of a nurse as an advocate in healthcare programs by answering the interview questions below.

Tell us about a healthcare program, within your practice. What are the costs and projected outcomes of this program?

Currently, the healthcare program within my practice is Hospital-Acquired Site Infections Prevention. The program aims at reducing incidences of hospital-acquired surgical site infections by educating nurses about the proper strategies to care for surgical wounds. Kumar and Rai (2017) argue that hospital-acquired surgical site infections can negatively affect patient experience and increase the cost of care. The project cost of this program is about $25,000. This program is projected to increase patient satisfaction and experience, organization revenue, and improve the hospital’s brand and image.

Who is your target population?

The target population for this program are elderly patients who have undergone surgical emergency operations within 30 days. A study by Kumar and Rai (2017) found that 17.7% of the patients who have undergone emergency surgeries are more likely to experience hospital-acquired surgical site infections than 12.5% of patients who have undergone elective surgical operations. Dégbey et al. (2021) also report that the prevalence of hospital-acquired surgical infection in patients receiving emergency surgeries was 7.81%. Surgical site infections usually develop into a serious issue especially for elderly patients due to their reduced rate of healing compared to their younger counterparts.

What is the role of the nurse in providing input for the design of this healthcare program? Can you provide examples?

The nurse will play a significant role in this program. First, a nurse will be needed to play the nurse educator’s role. A nurse who is vast in knowledge on how to care for surgical site infection will be needed to educate other nurses about the subject. Second, the nurse will be involved in designing and planning the implementation of the project. Lastly, a nurse will advocate for the project to ensure it receives the needed funding and support.

What is your role as an advocate for your target population for this healthcare program? Do you have input into design decisions? How else do you impact design?

As mentioned in part above, a nurse has the responsibility of advocating for the target patients. As a nurse leader, I will advocate for the target population by communicating with the management and asking them to support the project finically and with other resources. Another role is building relationships with stakeholders of the project to ensure their support. I will also contribute to design decisions by providing the nurses’ perspective. I will also impact design by providing nursing and change theories that should be applied in designing and implementing the project.

What is the role of the nurse in healthcare program implementation? How does this role vary between the design and implementation of healthcare programs? Can you provide examples?

The role of a nurse during program implementation is to monitor and ensure that all the program objectives are met. Another role is improving stakeholder connection by debriefing them on the status of the project. The roles of nurses during implementation and design are different. For instance, during design, nurses recommend theories to be applied and advocate stakeholder support. However, during implementation, they maintain stakeholder relationships and monitor the project.

Who are the members of a healthcare team that you believe are most needed to implement a program? Can you explain why?

Nurses should collaborate with various healthcare professionals for the success of the program. First, they should collaborate with nurse informaticists. Data will be required when presenting the project and asking the management to support it. Nurse informaticists are in change of patient data and can help in that regard. Nurse educators will also be required to provide education. Lastly, physicians specializing in surgery would be required to give their input.

Conclusion

The current health care program focuses on reducing incidences of hospital-acquired surgical site infections. The target population is elderly patients who have received emergency surgical care. A nurse is needed to advocate for it, design and plan the implementation plan, and act as an educator. A nurse can advocate for the program by communicating with the management and improving stakeholder relationships and support. A nurse will collaborate with physicians and nurse informaticists.
