Nursing Informatics
Nursing informatics plays an essential role in delivering care to patients. This paper will describe different elements that touch on nursing informatics.
Clinical scenario
A scenario I recall was of a patient in CDU who had been admitted to the hospital for a week. I was experiencing difficulties controlling the BP of the patient within a normal range. I had initially gathered the patient’s vital signs and administered the recommended medication as instructed by the charge nurse. By then I had little experience given that I was still in residency. The patient reported to be experiencing some chest pains and after assessing the patient, I did not observe any abnormalities
Following the patient’s trajectory and discomfort, I decided after consultation with the charge nurse to give the patient a dose of NG SL I had to review again his chart to assess what the issue might be. I noticed that the patient had previous health issues including a previous case of MI and pneumonia, with pneumonia having occurred a week prior to his admission.
From there I had to inform the charge nurse that pneumonia could be a contributing factor worsening the patient’s condition from which he was placed on some antibacterials based on the gathered information. Having collected the relevant data and integrated with my nursing knowledge, I was able to come up with the correct diagnosis that facilitated correct interventions to be made, which assisted in improving the outcomes of the patient.
The quote by Staggers and Nelson in chapter 7 of the textbook “In a way, all of us are already informatics nurses” highlights the fact that nurses in their daily experience are supposed to collect and manipulate data, and use that information to make wise decisions (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2017). This describes one of the roles of a nursing informaticist. Nursing informatics facilitates the collection, manipulation, and usage of health information to make prudent decisions when tending to patients.
Terminology use
Having a common terminology in a universal field like nursing holds several advantages. A shared model of terminology use facilitates communication among nurses and other healthcare workers. The scope can also be expanded across more than one geographical location, for example in countries where there is a shared nursing curriculum, or who share a unified terminology model. This can be a great benefit especially in advancing nursing knowledge since nurses can be able to interact with one another regardless of language barriers as opposed to having diverse models of terminologies (Stallinga et al., 2015).
Another advantage of having a common framework regarding nursing terminologies is that it facilitates meeting the required levels in terms of standards and interoperability of systems. This means that developed systems can be deployed without needing reintroduction to new terminologies used by newly developed systems. Similarly, having systems that have a common terminology will facilitate other healthcare workers who are not nurses to also be able to understand how to operate them when delivering care to patients without necessarily needing additional advanced training (Choi, Jansen, & Coenen, 2015).
Another advantage of shared terminology is the fact that the collection of shared data, for example, patient’s health data, that is used by different cadres of health care providers. By doing so, it will be easy not only for nurses but also for other health workers to conform to best practices when delivering care to patients (Choi, Jansen, & Coenen, 2015). Ultimately using a common terminology model improves efficiency in conducting different activities in nursing practice.
One of the disadvantages of using a shared terminology model is the fact that standardization is considered as a formalizing nursing language. However, most of the nursing conversation is done informally and thus may limit its practical use in nursing practice (Stallinga et al., 2015). Failure to agree on common standardized terminology also inhibits the adoption of standardization, which can cause confusion when delivering care to patients across platforms with different nursing terminologies
By using an agreed-upon terminology model, it will become easy for nurses and other health care workers to share information and transfer knowledge, regardless of language barriers, or differences in practice (Stallinga et al., 2015). This is because a shared terminology model will provide a common platform where nurses/health care workers can interact to advance clinical practice.
Justification of a NIS position
Nursing informatics is a field that has greatly benefited nursing practice by integrating the use of information technology into healthcare. A nursing informaticist in modern health care organization plays a crucial role in improving the outcomes of patients and facilitating the efficiency and effectiveness of nursing work.
Just like other nursing roles or specialties, for example, a pediatric nurse, a surgical nurse, to list a few, nursing informaticist is a specialization in nursing and an important one at that. The fact that they do not deliver direct care to patients should not be misconstrued to mean that they have no work to do in the nursing setup. Some of the essential roles that nurse informatics play are described as follows;
Nursing informaticist plays an essential role in coming up with health care systems that can assist in improving nurse’s efficiency when delivering care to patients, for example, the EHR system that the organization wants to implement. Nursing informaticist ensures that the design and implementation of such systems are advantageous to the nursing practice (Kennedy & Hussey, 2015).
Nursing informaticists also play a very important role in ensuring that the health care systems in place are properly maintained and look for opportunities to improve them. This is a task that an ordinary nurse will likely not have sufficient time to do. The role of nursing informaticists in reducing medical errors through the implemented health care systems is more than beneficial to the organization, patients, and health care workers. Nursing informaticists also ensure that the implemented healthcare system suits standard nursing practices and is ideal in improving patient care (Bickford, 2015).
A question that can arise is whether an ordinary nurse can double up in that position while at the same time tending to patients. The answer is no. Nursing informaticists have certain skill sets that make them better equipped to serve in that role. Most of the nurses may have some basic knowledge of informatics, but to effectively discharge the duties required, some specialized training may be needed (Collins et al., 2017). Similarly, having someone dedicated to that role will ensure that all responsibilities needed for the role are properly executed without adding extra workload to nurses taking care of patients.
Conclusion
From the information collected in the paper, there are various things that can be noted. One of them being that all nurses in some way play an informatics nurse role. The paper has also established the various advantages and disadvantages of having common nursing terminologies and the importance of the role of a NIS in a health care organization. Using this information, one can be able to understand different concepts of nursing informatics.
