Discussion Prompt
Discuss the essential skill sets that you, as a contemporary nurse leader, will need to use in order to successfully lead other professionals in today’s healthcare settings
Expert Answer and Explanation
Essential Skill Sets Needed By A Nurse Leader
A nurse leader is in a position to influence patients’ outcomes and ensure quality work life for the nurses. However, it is a complicated position that needs many skills set for one to be successful. One of the skills that I would need as a nurse leader is cultural awareness. Through globalization, it is common to find highly different cultures in healthcare in both nurses and patients (Zarzycka et al. 2020) As a nurse leader, one needs to understand the cultural differences, how they can influence the performance of other nurses, and how they can impact the patients’ perceptions of the treatment plan. This will be essential in making decisions that will influence all stakeholders positively.
Another skill needed by a nursing leader is emotional intelligence. Through this skill, the nurse leader will be self-aware, hence making it possible for them to understand limitations or biases that they might have. Moreover, the nurse will be empathetic towards the patients and fellow nurses through emotional intelligence, hence creating a healthy workspace (Prezerakos, 2018). It is also crucial for a nurse leader to be good at conflict resolution. When working together, people are bound to have disagreements, and there are no exceptions for nurses. Therefore a nurse leader should determine the cause of conflict and have a strategy to solve them with considerations of all parties involved.
Lastly, a nurse leader should commit to further ensuring that they communicate effectively. The quality of communication determines a good working environment. A nursing leader with a good communication strategy will understand the various needs of the employees and convince them of a particular course of action, hence improving responsiveness at the workplace.
